Moeen Ali


Moeen Ali is an English International cricketer. He is a left-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner and also batting all-rounder. After 2006 season he had played county cricket for Warwickshire. He represented England in all formats and won Warwickshire’s NBC Denis Compton Award in 2004 and 2005. In 2009 he was also nominated for Worcestershire’s NBC Denis Compton Award. In 2015 he was nominated as Cricketer of the Year. In the Indian Premier League, he played for the Royal Challengers Banglore.

Domestic Career:

For the County’s Second XI he was signed for Warwickshire and made a half-century. He made his first-class debut in 2005 against Cambridge University. He made 57 not out. In the same year against Sri Lanka, he made 52 not out, 100 not out and took seven wickets. In 2006 he was selected for the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka.Coach Andy Pick selected him as a captain and he made three half-centuries and took seven wickets in the tournament. In 2006 he played for his first List A matches. Against derbyshire, he played his first List  A  match. In the first-class cricket, he took his first wickets. In his debut in the County Championship, he scored 68 runs against Nottinghamshire.

On April 5,2007 he made his debut for Worcestershire. He scored 250 highest first-class against Glamorgan at New Road. He had a partnership of 219 with Matt Pardoe. Worcestershire gave him a promotion to the first division of the County Championship at the end of 2010 season. Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan suggested him to play club cricket in Bangladesh. Later then he represented Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Ispahani Premier Division in 2010. In 2011 he spent three weeks as a captain in 2011 season. It was for the first time that he had a chance of captaincy at the county. He scored 390 runs in the County Championship and at this event he made himself the club’s second –highest scorer in the competition behind Solanki. He scored a single century and his average was 33.21 runs per innings. He was later on included in the 13-man England Development squad.

In 2013 season he signed a new 5- year contract. He had 5 successive 50s and performance was very good. For the England Lions, he scored 61 runs against Australia. He was awarded County cricket’s MVP award as he beat Samit Patel on the final day of the season. He averaged 62 in Division 2, scored 1375 runs and he was the highest of any batsmen in first-class cricket who had 4 centuries, 8 fifties and 28 wickets.

International Career:

In 2014 he was selected for the English squad for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. On 28  match he made half-century by scoring 55 runs. In 2014 scored 49 runs in 4 matches as he was a part of England’s World T20 squad. In the same year, he played in the Test series against Sri Lanka. He scored 48 in the first inning and scored 4 in the second inning and made his debut in the first Test. He made his maiden century in the second innings of the second Test.

In the same year, Ali took four wickets in the first Test against India and  41 runs. He scored 32 and 39 in the second Test. In the third Test of the series, he took his first 5 wicket haul. In the first three ODIs against India, he didn’t play but he was selected for the fourth match of the ODI. In the final match of the ODI, he took 2-34 and England won the first match of the series. In the first ODI of the seven-match series, he hit 19 off 87 balls. In the third match, he scored 58 and took figures of 2-34 and thus England won the first match.

In 2015 he made 10 with the bat in the first match of 2015 World Cup Campaign against Australia. Against Scotland, he scored a century and made 128 form 107 balls. He got the man of the match award and took two wickets. For the Second Test Match series, he took figures of 1-47 in the first innings. In the third match, he made 58 in the first innings. Ali scored 58 in the first test series against New Zealand. In New Zealand’s innings, he took three wickets and England won by 124 runs. For the 2015 Ashes series, he was selected and scored 77 in England’s first innings. Later on, he took 3-59  in Australia’s second innings. In the second test of Australia’s first innings, he made figures of 1-38. He took 2-78 in Australia’s second innings but unfortunately, England faces defeat.Ali took figures of 13 and made 72 with the bat in the T20 match. He got the award of the man of the match. He made 17 in the first ODI series against Australia but unfortunately, England also faces defeat in that match. He took figures of 1-68 but England lost in the match. In the next game, he took 3-32 which helped England towards their first success of the series. In the fourth match of the series, he took 2-40 which helped England to a three-wicket victory.

In 2015 in the the first Test against Pakistan he tried hard with the ball scored 121 runs in the first innings. He took two wickets in the second innings. He took one wicket in each of the first three matches which helped a lot England into a 2-1 series. He took figures of 1-30 and 1-22 in the two of the T20Is.

In 2016 in the Test series against South Africa. he returned back to his lower middle order place. England won in the first test by 241 runs and he was awarded as Man of the Match. England won the series by 2-1. He took figures of 3-43 in the first match of ODI series against South Africa and England won by 39 runs on DL method. In the next match, England took a five-wicket victory  but unfortunately England lost the final three matches of the series. In the T20 match, he took 2-22 and England lost the match by 3 wickets. In the second match, he took figures of 1-25 but South Africa won the game by nine wickets. In 2016 in the T20 World Cup he took figures of 1-38 against West Indies,2-34 against South Africa and 1-17 against Afghanistan. In the T20 World Cup, he also made a record for the highest partnership with David Willey for the 8th wicket. England won by 7 wickets and qualify for the final as he took figures of 1-10 against New Zealand. In the second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-Le-Street he scored his second century. He scored 155 not out including 2 sixes which helped a lot in England to reach a score of 498-9. England won by nine wickets he took one wicket in the match.In th first ODI against Sri Lanka, he took figures of 1-69.IN the second Test against Pakistan he took figures of 2-43 in Pakistan’s first innings and 3-88 in England’s second innings so England won by 330 runs. In the third match, he scored 63 runs with the bat in England’s first innings. In the final match of the series he made 108  and Pakistan won the match by ten wickets. England won by 44 runs in first ODI and he took figures of 1-30. He has failed to take any wicket in the second ODI but he scored 21 and England won by four wickets. England won by 169 runs in the third match and he took one wicket. He took figures of 2-39 in the fourth match and scored 45.

He made 68 in the first Test in England’s first innings and took figures of 3-75 against Bangladesh. In the second test, he took figures of 5-57 and he took only one wicket in the second innings. In the first Test against India, He scored 117 runs and England made 537 runs. He took figures of 2-85 and match ended in a draw.In the second Test he took 3-98 and England lost by 246 runs. In the third test, he made 16 and took figures of 0-33. In the fourth Test, he made 50 and took figures of 2-174. In the final Test, he made 146.

In 2017 Ali made 31 in the first ODI against the West Indies. England won the match by 45 ruins. He took figures n 1-44 against West Indies. In the same year in the first Test against South, Africa e scored 2000 runs and took 100 wickets in the Tests and became the fifth-fastest a player  in term matches. He also took a first ten-wicket haul in the Test. He was the first England player after Ian Botham who scored a Test half Century and take ten wickets in the same match.Ali played a quieter Test series against West Indies in which he scored ok 5 wickets in the three-match series of the ODI series. He scored  unbeaten 45 off 25 deliveries in the fourth match of the ODI. In 2017-18 Ashes series, he played in all 5 Tests.
