Niaz Stadium is situated in Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This stadium was
formerly known as Shahi Bagh Stadium. This stadium is owned by Sports Board
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This stadium is operated by District Cricket Association. This the stadium was established in 1984 and it has the capacity of 20,000 spectators. This
stadium is beautifully constructed and It has two ends called Pavilion end and
College end. In Pakistan, this stadium is a Test and one-day cricket ground and
hub of cricket in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. With an
electronic scoreboard, this stadium is the first ever venue in Pakistan.The Peshawar
University students provided the scoreboard to the stadium.
Since the establishment of this stadium seven Test matches were hosted by the stadium. The First Test match was played here between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Septemeber 1995 and the last Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in August 2003.Since 1984 the ground has hosted 17 One Day International matches. The First One Day International was decided to host by the stadium between Pakistan and India on 2 November 1984 but unfortunately, the match was canceled without a ball being bowled as Indian Prime mister Indira Gandhi was executed. After 10 days the first One Day International match was played between Pakistan and New Zealand at the ground of this stadium. Pakistan won the match by 64 runs. The last One Day International match was played between Pakistan and Bangladesh in August 2003 at the ground of this stadium. Recently The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved 1.2 million rupees for the renovation of the stadium. The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs has decided that this stadium will be renovated according to International Standards. Radi Pakistan has reported that the directorate has also decided to facilitate the players, officials, journalists, and spectators with all modern facilities.
Many International and famous players like
Younis Khan, Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi made a start of their domestic career at
the ground of this stadium.
