Cricket Championship
World cricket championship is an event in which top team of the world competes with each other. World cricket championship is played every four years organized and supervised by International Cricket Council (ICC). This event is considered as the Flagship event of ICC. This event is played in limited over format. First, it is played in one-day format but in 2007 it is also played in T20 format as well. Australia has won the tournament five time, west indies and India have won twice each, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won only once each. Top-ranked teams automatic qualifies for the world while rest of the team’s play ICC world cup qualifier fourteen team played the event in eleven editions of the tournament while ICC announced the only 10 teams will take part in 2019 world cup and will be played in England.
The very first Men world cricket championship was played in 1975 in England in ODI format consist of sixty over and six balls per over.1979 and 1983 world cup is also played in England known as Prudential cup. Eight teams participated in the first event west indies have won that event defeated Australia in the home of cricket Lord’ s but from 1987 event hosting sharing has been started between ICC members.
In 1979 world cricket championship ICC introduced ICC Trophy competition to select the teams who don’t have test status Sri Lanka and Canada qualified for the world cup. West Indies have won the world cup second consecutive time defeating the host England.
1983 world cricket championship England hosted the world cup for the third consecutive time. Zimbabwe qualified through ICC Trophy. In this world, cup ICC have made some changes in rule introduced fielding circle of 30 yards away from the stumps. Four fielders must be inside the thirty yards’ circle. India has won the world cup defeating west indies in the final.
India and Pakistan jointly hosted the 1987 world cricket championship, the first time that the event was held outside England. The matches were reduced from 60 to 50 overs per innings, Australia won the championship by defeating England by 7 runs in the final, the closest margin in World Cup final history.
The 1992 World Cup, held in Australia and New Zealand, ICC have introduced many changes, such as colored clothing, white balls, day/night matches, and a change to the fielding restriction rules. The South African cricket team participated in the event for the first time. Pakistan overcame a dismal start in the tournament to eventually defeat England by 22 runs in the final and emerge as winners.
The 1996 championship was held in the Indian subcontinent for a second time, with the inclusion of Sri Lanka as host for some of its group stage matches. In the semi-final, Sri Lanka defeated host India at Eden Gardens by eight wickets while scoring 120 runs in pursuit of 252, was awarded victory by default after crowd unrest broke out in protest against the Indian performance. Sri Lanka has won their maiden championship by defeating Australia by seven wickets in the final at Lahore.
In 1999 the event was hosted by England, with some matches also being held in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and the Netherlands. Twelve teams contested the World Cup. Australia qualified for the semi-finals after reaching their target in their Super 6 match against South Africa off the final over of the match. They reached to the final with a tied match in the semi-final also against South Africa where a mix-up between South African batsmen Lance Klusener and Allan Donald and Donald was run out. In the final, Australia dismissed Pakistan for 132 and chased the target in less than 20 overs and with eight wickets in hand.
2003 World Cup was hosted South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. fourteen teams were participating in the event to Kenya's victories over Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, among others and New Zealand forfeit the match they refused to play in Kenya because of security concerns that means Kenya to reach the semi-finals, In the final, Australia made 359 runs for the loss of two wickets, the largest ever total in a final, defeating India by 125 runs.
In 2007 event was hosted by the West Indies and teams increased to sixteen teams. Australia defeated Sri Lanka in the final by 53 runs (D/L) in farcical light conditions and extended their undefeated run in the World Cup to 29 matches and Australia defeated Sri Lanka and won final Australia won the championship for the third consecutive time.
2011 Cricket World Cup hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh together. Pakistan was stripped of their hosting rights due to security concerns with the games originally scheduled for Pakistan redistributed to the other host countries. The number of teams participating in the World Cup dropped down to fourteen. India won their second World Cup title by beating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final in Mumbai and became the first country to win the final on home ground.
2015 Cricket World Cup jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The number of participants remained at fourteen. New Zealand beat South Africa in a thrilling first semi-final to qualify for their maiden World Cup final. Australia defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the final at Melbourne to lift the World Cup trophy for the fifth time.
