India Cricket Team World Cup History


The Indian cricket team has played all the edition of the world cup till now. They are two-time champions they have won 1983 and 2011 world cups editions. They also played the final of the 2003 world cup while they were among the semi-finalists thrice (1987,1996 and 2015). They were knocked from groups stages 4 times (1975,1979,1992, and 2007). They won 46 world cup matches and lost 27 matches with 1 match tied.

India in world cup 1975:

In the first ever world cup edition India was placed in group B where they had to face England, New Zealand and East Africa. Indian team captained by Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghava. They played three games they won 1 game against East Africa and lost 2 against England and New Zealand. With two lost they couldn’t have progressed to the next stage of the world cup and knocked out from the world cup.

India in world cup 1979:

In the second edition of the cricket world cup, the Indian team was led by Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan for the second time. India was expected to put a decent show although they were not among the favorites. India begins its world cup campaign against the defending champions with a huge loss. They also defeated New Zealand and Sri Lanka. They lost all their group stage matches and eliminated from the world cup from the group stage.     

India in world cup 1983:

In the third edition of the world cup which is Round-Robin based India started their campaign under the captaincy of Kapil Dev against west indies with a win. But they had two consecutive against Australia and west Indies while they won the games against Zimbabwe and they have must win game against Aussies which they won convincingly and qualified for the semi-final stage for the first time in the history.
In the semi-final India faced hosts England where they produced another upset. They defeated England by six wickets and qualified for the final in the first time in the history of the world cup.
In the final, they were up against hot favorites West Indies surprising resistance by the tail allowed India to reach 183 all out in the 55th over. It seemed to be all over for India,) and Madan Lal (3/31) took three wickets each, as the West Indies crashed to 140 all out in the 53rd over, setting up a famous tournament victory for India which was one of the biggest upsets not only in cricket     

India in world cup 1987:

In the 1987 world cup edition, India was the defending champions once again led by Kapil Dev. India placed in group A alongside Australia, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. In started the event with a loss against Australia by only 1 run. In the next two matches, they defeated New Zealand and Zimbabwe. And qualified for the semis for the second consecutive time.
In the semi-final, they met England where India and lost the match and knocked out from the tournament and was unable to defend the title.

India in world cup 1992:

In 1992 world cup edition India led by Muhammad Azharuddin.india were expected to perform well in the tournament. The world cup was Round-Robin based India played 8 games out of which they lost 5 games and were eliminated from the world cup.

India in world cup 1996:

In 1996 world cup edition India was expected to perform well at their home soil under the captaincy of Mohammad Azharuddin for the second time. India started the tournament with a win against Kenya. India lost to Australia in the next game.in the next Sri Lanka also defeated India while they ended the group stage with a win against Zimbabwe. With this win, India finished third in their group and qualified for the quarterfinals, setting up a match against arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan. India defeated Pakistan and qualified for the semis where they faced Sri Lanka.in the match Muttiah Muralitharan and part timers de Silva and Kumar Dharmasena, who altogether took 6 wickets as India lost 7 wickets for 22 runs to slump to 120/8 in the 35th over, with still 132 runs to win. At this point, sections of the crowd began setting fire to the stands and throwing missiles onto the field. The play was stopped as the crowd's anger began to develop into a dangerous riot. The umpires and match referee Clive Lloyd decided to award the game to Sri Lanka because India had no chance of winning from their current position in the match even if the match were to resume, knocking them out of the World Cup.  

India in world cup 1999:

In 1999 world cup edition India began their campaign with a close loss to South Africa at Hove in the final overs of the match. India next played Zimbabwe he match was a thriller, with India losing in the end by 3 runs despite India finishing second in Group A, they began the Super Six stage with no points due to the controversial Byzantine points system which gave a team 2 points at the start of the Super Six stage for beating a team in the Group stage which had also qualified for the Super Six stage (India did not win against fellow qualifiers South Africa and Zimbabwe). In super six stages India won only 1 match against Pakistan and was eliminated from the tournament.

India in world cup 2003:

In 2003 world cup edition India captained by Sourav Ganguly did well at group stages they won 9 matches in the tournament and they progressed to the semis. In the semi-final, they got Kenya to face and defeated them comfortably and progressed to Final for the second time in history. In the final, they faced Australia where they defeated and ends up as Runners up.   

India in world cup 2007:


In 2007 world cup edition India led by Rahul Dravid. India expected to perform well in the tournament with a strong team. Bangladesh upset India and defeated India .with that defeat India was eliminated from the group stage tournament.

India in world cup 2011:

In 2011 world cup edition India was expected to perform well in familiar conditions with strongest batting side in the tournament under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India did well throughout the group stage match and qualified for the quarter-final. In the quarterfinals, India faced defending champions Australia. Australia was restricted to 260/6 in 50 in reply, as India chased down the target with 5 wickets and 14 deliveries to spare. With this win, Australia's title defense ended and India entered the semifinals. India played semifinal with arch-rival Pakistan. India made 260/9 in 50 overs in reply, Pakistan fell behind the run rate and was bowled all out for 231. In final India faced Sri Lanka where Sri Lanka batted first and made 274 runs as Kumar Sangakkara batted superbly. In reply, India chased down the target with the loss of six wickets and made the history by became champions. 

India in world cup 2015:

In 2015 world cup edition India went into the tournament as defending champions and as favorites under the captaincy of MS Dhoni for the second consecutive time. India started their journey with a highly anticipated match against Pakistan and they defeated Pakistan.in next three games they defeated South Africa, UAE, West Indies, Ireland and Zimbabwe in their next games. India topped the group and qualified for the quarter-final match where they faced  Bangladesh. India defeated Bangladesh comfortably and progressed to the semi-final against host Australia where Australia defeated India and that brings the end of the journey of India in the world cup.
