Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground

Sophia Gardens Cardiff cricket ground in Cardiff, Wales located in Sophia Gardens on the River Taff. It is the home ground of Glamorgan County Cricket Club since 1967. It has the capacity of 15,643 spectators to watch a match owned by Cardiff City Council and Architect by HLN Architects. It’s one end is River Taff End while the other is Cathedral Road End. Besides the cricket, it also has a large sports hall complex of the Sports Wales National Centre.


The ground has been the venue of international cricket since May 1999 but only for One Day Internationals.it has hosted the 1999 cricket world cup match between Australia and New Zealand. It also hosted 2013 champions trophy matches including a semi-final. The ground hosted the T20I matches as well.
In 2008 ECB announced to host the Ashes series match at Sophia Gardens in 2009 and it became the 100th venue to host the test match. In July 2011, the ECB stripped the ground of its right to host the 2012 West Indies Test because of Glamorgan's late payment of the £2.5 million fees it owed for hosting the 2011 Sri Lanka Test.

In 2007 the ground redevelopment started cost £9.4 million. £4.5 million loans taken from a Cardiff council loan. The ground reopened in 2008 when Glamorgan played a match against Gloucestershire in a Friends Provident Trophy.
In March 2008 Glamorgan makes a sponsorship deal with SWALEC for 10-years for giving name right to the stadium. In June 2015 SWALEC renamed stadium to SSE PLC the new logo designed of the shape of the stadium.
